Instructions d'entretien
Aloe vera is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in bright, direct sunlight and prefers warm temperatures. It can tolerate dry conditions and does not require frequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Aloe vera can adapt to a range of humidity levels but prefers moderate humidity.
Récolte
Aloe vera leaves can be harvested once the plant reaches maturity, typically around 3-4 years of age. Harvesting is best done in the morning when the leaves are full of gel. To harvest, select the outermost leaves, which are the oldest and most nutrient-rich. Use a sharp knife to cut the leaves close to the base of the plant. Allow the cut leaves to drain their yellow sap (aloin) for a few minutes before using the gel inside. It's important to leave enough leaves on the plant to ensure continued growth and health.
Sol
Aloe vera prefers well-draining soil, such as a sandy or cactus mix. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Avoid using heavy, clay-based soils that retain moisture. A pot with drainage holes is recommended to ensure excess water can escape.
Engrais
Aloe vera does not require frequent fertilization. During the growing season, you can feed it with a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-40-10 formula, diluted to half strength. Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer months.
Rempotage
Repot Aloe vera every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and has good drainage. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, shake off excess soil, and place it in the new pot with fresh, well-draining soil.
Propagation
Aloe vera can be easily propagated by removing and replanting the offsets, or 'pups,' that grow at the base of the parent plant. Allow the offsets to dry for a day or two before planting them in a new pot with well-draining soil. Water sparingly until the new plants establish roots.
Taille
Pruning is not typically required for Aloe vera. However, you can remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking tidy. Use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to cut the leaves at the base.
Toxicité
Aloe vera is toxic to pets, including cats and dogs, if ingested. The plant contains compounds called saponins and anthraquinones, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. It is generally safe for humans when used topically, but ingestion of the latex layer just under the skin can cause digestive issues.
