À PROPOS

Feijoa sellowiana (commonly sold as pineapple guava; also known as Acca sellowiana) is an evergreen shrub to small tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), native to subtropical highlands of southern South America. It’s grown as an ornamental and for its aromatic, edible fruit, and it tolerates a range of conditions once established. In cooler climates it may slow down in winter rather than going fully dormant; fruiting and growth depend on warmth and adequate sun, and some selections need a compatible pollinizer for best yields.

DÉTAILS

Instructions d'entretien
Grow in full sun for best flowering and fruiting, though it can tolerate some light shade. Water regularly while establishing, then water deeply when the top portion of soil has dried; avoid keeping it constantly soggy. It performs best in mild to warm conditions with moderate humidity, and it benefits from protection from hard freezes and drying winds. Mulch to moderate soil moisture and temperature, and provide consistent care during flowering and fruit development for better fruit set.
Sol
Use a well-drained loam or sandy-loam type soil; good drainage is important to prevent root problems. Feijoa prefers slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions and does well with added organic matter. In heavy clay, amend and/or plant on a slight mound or raised area to improve drainage and aeration.
Engrais
Feed lightly to moderately during active growth, especially for young plants and fruiting specimens. A balanced fertilizer works well, and excessive nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit. Top-dressing with compost and using mulch can help maintain steady, moderate fertility.
Rempotage
Feijoa is usually grown in the ground outdoors; if kept in a container, repot when rootbound or when growth slows despite good care. Move up one pot size and refresh the mix with a well-draining medium. The best time is typically during mild weather when the plant is not under heat or cold stress.
Propagation
Propagation is commonly done by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in the warmer months; cuttings help keep desirable fruiting traits true to type. Seed is possible but can be variable in fruit quality and timing. Layering can also work on flexible branches in suitable conditions.
Taille
Prune to shape and to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and to maintain an open canopy for light and airflow. Light annual pruning after fruiting (or after the main growth flush) is usually sufficient; avoid overly hard pruning if you want consistent flowering and fruiting.
Toxicité
Feijoa (pineapple guava) is generally considered non-toxic to pets and people, and the fruit and petals are edible. As with any plant, eating large amounts of leaves or unripe material may cause mild stomach upset in some animals, but it is not commonly listed as a poisonous species.
Supplémentaire
For best fruiting, ensure strong sun exposure and consider planting more than one compatible variety if fruit set is poor. Protect young plants from heavy frost, and keep watering consistent during flowering and fruit fill to reduce fruit drop and improve quality.
