DETAILS

Care Instructions
Chervil prefers moderate temperatures and should be kept in a location with indirect bright light. It thrives in environments with moderate humidity and should be watered regularly to keep the soil partially moist. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Chervil can be grown both indoors and outdoors, making it a versatile herb for various settings.
Harvest
Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) should be harvested when the leaves are young and tender, typically around 60 days after planting. Harvesting is best done in the morning when the essential oils are most concentrated. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the outer leaves, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing. Regular harvesting encourages new growth. Avoid harvesting during flowering as the leaves can become bitter. Chervil prefers cool, temperate climates and should be kept well-watered but not waterlogged.
Soil
Chervil grows best in well-draining loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter to provide the necessary nutrients. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging, which can harm the plant.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced fertilizer with a nutrient composition of 5-10-10. Fertilize the plant every few weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flavor.
Repotting
Chervil can be repotted if it outgrows its container. Repot in the early spring before the growing season begins. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage and fill it with fresh, well-draining soil. Handle the roots gently to avoid damage.
Propagation
Chervil can be propagated by seeds. Sow the seeds directly into the soil in early spring or late summer. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which usually takes about 2-3 weeks. Thin the seedlings to allow enough space for growth.
Pruning
Regular pruning is beneficial for chervil. Pinch back the growing tips to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to maintain plant health.
Toxicity
Chervil is not toxic to pets or humans. It is safe to grow in households with pets and children. However, as with any plant, it is best to avoid excessive consumption.
Additional
Chervil is a cool-season herb and may bolt (flower and go to seed) quickly in hot weather. To extend its growing season, consider planting it in a shaded area during the warmer months or using a shade cloth. Regular harvesting of the leaves can also help delay bolting.
