Care Instructions
The Zebra Plant requires bright, indirect light to thrive. It prefers moderate temperatures and high humidity. Water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves.
Soil
Aphelandra squarrosa prefers well-draining loamy soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mix of peat, perlite, and potting soil works well. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.
Fertilizer
Feed the Zebra Plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer, such as 20-20-20, every two weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.
Repotting
Repot the Zebra Plant every 1-2 years or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a pot that is one size larger and ensure it has good drainage. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, shake off excess soil, and place it in the new pot with fresh soil.
Propagation
Propagate Aphelandra squarrosa through stem cuttings. Take cuttings in the spring or early summer, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant it in a moist, well-draining soil mix. Keep the cutting in a warm, humid environment until roots develop.
Pruning
Prune the Zebra Plant to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and trim back leggy stems. Pruning is best done in the spring or early summer.
Toxicity
Aphelandra squarrosa is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The plant contains compounds that can cause gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting and diarrhea. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
