DETAILS

Care Instructions
Sawara Cypress prefers temperate climates and should be planted in a location that receives full sun. It thrives in moderate temperatures and requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. The tree benefits from moderate humidity and should be protected from extreme cold and heat.
Soil
Chamaecyparis pisifera prefers well-draining loamy soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. The soil should be kept moderately moist but not waterlogged. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
A balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10 can be applied in the spring to support healthy growth. Fertilize once a year, taking care not to over-fertilize, as this can harm the tree.
Repotting
If grown in a container, repotting should be done every 2-3 years in the spring. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage. Gently remove the tree from its old pot, trim any circling roots, and place it in the new pot with fresh soil.
Propagation
Propagation can be done through seeds or cuttings. For cuttings, take semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or early autumn. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and plant them in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the cuttings moist and in a shaded area until they root.
Pruning
Pruning is necessary to maintain the tree's shape and remove any dead or diseased branches. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts and avoid damaging the tree.
Toxicity
Chamaecyparis pisifera is not known to be toxic to pets or humans. However, as with all plants, it is best to prevent pets and children from ingesting any part of the plant.
Additional
Sawara Cypress is relatively low-maintenance once established. Mulching around the base of the tree can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Regularly check for pests and diseases, and treat any issues promptly to keep the tree healthy.
