Dendrobium moniliforme, commonly called Sekkoku or the Japanese stone orchid, is a small pseudobulbous (cane) epiphytic to lithophytic orchid native to China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. It grows on trees and rocks in temperate to subtropical forests. Plants typically flower in spring on mature canes, producing fragrant white to pale blooms. It benefits from a cool, drier winter rest to initiate flowering. Compact growth, keiki formation, and high tolerance for mounting make it a favorite among collectors.
Provide bright, filtered light with good air movement. Water regularly during active growth, allowing the medium to approach dryness between waterings but not stay dry for long; reduce watering markedly in the cooler months to provide a rest. Keep in moderate temperatures with distinct day–night drops and moderate to high humidity; avoid stagnant, overly wet conditions. Do not overpot; ensure strong airflow and diffuse light for best flowering.
Soil
Use a very free-draining epiphyte mix such as medium bark with chopped sphagnum, perlite, and charcoal, or grow mounted on cork or hardwood with a moss layer. The medium should retain some moisture yet drain rapidly; never allow prolonged waterlogging. Slightly acidic conditions are preferred, and excellent aeration around the roots is essential.
Fertilizer
Feed lightly during the growing season using a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) applied weakly, weekly. Flush with clear water periodically to prevent salt buildup. Reduce or stop feeding during the cool, dry winter rest, resuming as new roots and shoots appear in spring.
Repotting
Repot or remount every 2–3 years, or when the medium breaks down, ideally just as new roots begin after flowering. Use a snug container or mount to keep roots airy. Minimize root disturbance and avoid burying new growths; resume normal watering gradually after repotting.
Propagation
Propagate by division of clumps with several healthy canes or by removing and establishing keikis once they have sufficient roots. Perform divisions in spring when new growth and roots are starting, and keep humidity high until new divisions establish.
Pruning
Routine pruning is minimal. Remove only spent flower spikes and dead, desiccated canes with sterile tools. Do not cut green or living canes, as they store water and nutrients and may bloom again.
Toxicity
Orchids, including Dendrobium moniliforme, are generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans; ingestion may occasionally cause mild gastrointestinal upset. As with any plant, supervise pets and children to prevent chewing.
Additional
Provide strong air circulation and a noticeable drop in night temperatures to encourage flowering. A cool, drier winter rest with bright light improves bud set. Mounted plants need more frequent watering; potted plants should dry relatively quickly between waterings.
