DETAILS

Care Instructions
Epidendrum rigidum thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers moderate temperatures. It requires high humidity and should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out partially between waterings. This orchid can be grown both indoors and outdoors, provided it is protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Soil
Epidendrum rigidum prefers a well-draining, loamy soil mix that retains some moisture but does not become waterlogged. A mix designed for orchids, which often includes bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss, is ideal. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 20-20-20. Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season and reduce frequency during the winter months. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid over-fertilization.
Repotting
Repot Epidendrum rigidum every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Repotting is best done in the spring. Use a fresh orchid mix and ensure the new pot has good drainage. Gently remove the old medium from the roots and trim any dead or rotting roots before placing the plant in the new pot.
Propagation
Epidendrum rigidum can be propagated through division. This is best done during repotting. Carefully separate the plant into smaller sections, ensuring each section has healthy roots and at least one pseudobulb. Plant the divisions in fresh orchid mix and water lightly until new growth appears.
Pruning
Pruning is not typically required for Epidendrum rigidum. However, you can remove spent flower spikes and any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking tidy. Use sterilized scissors or pruning shears to prevent the spread of disease.
Toxicity
Epidendrum rigidum is not known to be toxic to pets or humans. However, it is always a good practice to keep plants out of reach of pets and children to prevent any accidental ingestion.
