DETAILS

Care Instructions
Gardenia jasminoides thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers moderate temperatures. It requires high humidity and should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Regular misting can help maintain humidity levels. Avoid placing the plant in drafty areas or near heating vents.
Soil
Gardenias prefer well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.0. A loamy soil mix enriched with organic matter is ideal. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not soggy to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Feed Gardenia jasminoides with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the dormancy period. Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants to maintain soil acidity.
Repotting
Repot Gardenia jasminoides every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a pot that is one size larger and ensure it has good drainage. Gently loosen the root ball and place the plant in fresh, well-draining soil.
Propagation
Gardenias can be propagated through stem cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Use a sharp, clean tool to take 4-6 inch cuttings from healthy, non-flowering stems. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone and plant in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the cuttings in a warm, humid environment until roots develop.
Pruning
Prune Gardenia jasminoides after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage new growth. Remove dead or yellowing leaves and spent flowers. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts just above a leaf node.
Toxicity
Gardenia jasminoides is toxic to pets, particularly dogs and cats. Ingestion can cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting and diarrhea. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children.
Additional
To encourage blooming, ensure the plant receives adequate light and humidity. Avoid overwatering and ensure good air circulation around the plant. Regularly check for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, and treat promptly if detected.
