Care Instructions
Creeping juniper prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal watering. This plant thrives in moderate temperatures and does well in low to moderate humidity. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages healthy growth.
Soil
Creeping juniper prefers sandy soil with good drainage. It can tolerate poor soil conditions but thrives best in moderately fertile soil. Ensure the soil is not waterlogged to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10. Fertilize in early spring and again in late summer to support growth. Avoid over-fertilizing as it can lead to excessive growth and weaken the plant.
Repotting
Repot creeping juniper when it outgrows its container or every 2-3 years. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Gently remove the plant from its current pot, loosen the roots, and place it in the new pot with fresh soil.
Propagation
Propagate creeping juniper through cuttings or layering. Take cuttings in late summer or early fall, dip them in rooting hormone, and plant them in a well-draining soil mix. Layering can be done by bending a low branch to the ground, covering it with soil, and allowing it to root before severing it from the parent plant.
Pruning
Prune creeping juniper in early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches and trim back overgrown areas to maintain the desired shape. Avoid heavy pruning as it can stress the plant.
Toxicity
Creeping juniper is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The berries and needles contain compounds that can cause gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, and diarrhea. Keep pets and children away from the plant to prevent accidental ingestion.
