DETAILS

Care Instructions
Oncidium altissimum requires bright, indirect light and moderate temperatures. It thrives in high humidity and should be watered when the top layer of the soil begins to dry out. Avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to mimic its natural habitat.
Soil
This orchid prefers a well-draining, loamy soil mix that can retain some moisture but also allows excess water to drain away. A mix of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer with a nutrient composition of 20-20-20. Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season and reduce frequency during the dormant period. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid over-fertilization.
Repotting
Repot Oncidium altissimum every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Repotting is best done in the spring after the blooming period. Use a fresh orchid mix and ensure the new pot has good drainage. Gently remove old media from the roots and trim any dead or rotting roots before repotting.
Propagation
Propagation is typically done through division. Divide the plant during repotting by carefully separating the pseudobulbs, ensuring each division has at least three healthy pseudobulbs. Plant the divisions in fresh orchid mix and provide the same care as the parent plant.
Pruning
Pruning is not generally required for Oncidium altissimum. However, you can remove spent flower spikes and any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and health.
Toxicity
Oncidium altissimum is not known to be toxic to pets or humans. However, it is always best to keep plants out of reach of pets and children to prevent any accidental ingestion.
Additional
Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal infections and pests. Regularly check for signs of pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if found.
