DETAILS

Care Instructions
Cherry laurel thrives in moderate temperatures and prefers bright, indirect light. It requires regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. The plant benefits from moderate humidity and should be protected from extreme cold. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages healthy growth.
Soil
Cherry laurel prefers well-draining loamy soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. The soil should be rich in organic matter to support its growth. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal for this plant.
Fertilizer
Fertilize cherry laurel with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in the spring and mid-summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive growth and reduced flowering. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.
Repotting
Repot cherry laurel when it outgrows its current container, typically every 2-3 years. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, loosen the roots, and place it in the new pot with fresh soil.
Propagation
Cherry laurel can be propagated through semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late summer. Cut a healthy stem about 10-15 cm long, remove the lower leaves, and dip the cut end in rooting hormone. Plant the cutting in a pot with a well-draining soil mix and keep it in a warm, humid environment until roots develop.
Pruning
Prune cherry laurel in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches, and trim back overgrown areas to maintain the desired shape. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and improves air circulation within the plant.
Toxicity
Cherry laurel is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The leaves, seeds, and berries contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can release cyanide when chewed or digested. Symptoms of poisoning include difficulty breathing, vomiting, and seizures. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
Additional
Cherry laurel is a versatile plant that can be used for hedging, screening, or as a standalone ornamental tree. It is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from regular care to keep it healthy and attractive. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
